"He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son" .... 2 John 1:9

Five Smooth Stones of David (Part-1)

(VBS conducted at GDL, BLR from 06 – 10 May 2013)

“And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a script; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine (Goliath)   ” – I Samuel 17:40..

While throwing if you use rough stones, it will hurt your hands and also it will not go fast or powerfully as you desire.  Further smooth stones are seemed to be weighty and hit the enemy more deep than rough stones.  Stones are attained this smoothness by staying in water together for a long time.  Water speaks the Word of God (Eph.5:26) and staying together in water speaks our “fellowship with one another” in Christ in the fellowship of apostles and their teachings (Acts 2:42).  The stones are becoming smooth by rubbing each other repeatedly according to the movement of water upon them.  Many are unwilling to come into the fellowship of God’s people.   Such people are always seen rough and they are unable to overcome their enemies.

These stones are always receiving fresh water, because it is lying in brook or river where water flows continuously.  It shows new new revelation we receive through the meditation and study of the Word of God.  To become smooth we need new revelation and studies.   Since it is lying in flowing fresh waters, it remain cool always even in the midst of sickness, trials and temptations also.  Though you may be able to overcome Satan, your spiritual life cannot be built up until and unless you achieve a war-free life in you.  David was a man of valor and hence God did not allow him to build a temple for Him.

Perhaps you may think if David had faith in God that he will be able to kill Goliath with one stone, why he took five stones in his hand.  Is it because of his doubt?  No.  He says to Goliath that “I come in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied” (I Sam.17:45).  He had a firm revelation about the five Names of God Jehovah; Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isa.9:6).  Prophet Isaiah wrote this book much later, but David knew it by revelation and hence took the five stones.  In one sense David took one stone which was a combination five stones.

Five smooth stones are –

  • Blood of Jesus
  • Word of God
  • Anointing
  • Faith
  • Name of God

John 6: 54 – “Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life”

In the Blood there is -

·        Atoning:(Improvement or making up)

Example: The woman who washed Jesus’ feet with tears and wiped them with the hair of her head, did all this because her sins were covered cancelled or pardoned. (Luke 7:44-47)

·        Remitting: (Taking away)

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, their sins and iniquities will I remember no more ( Heb 8:12)

·        Redeeming: (Buying back)

We are bought with his precious blood from our vain traditions (I Pet 1:18, 19).

·        Reconciliation( Made nigh)

Peace between God and men. Ye who sometimes were afar off are made nigh by the Blood of Jesus (Eph. 1:3)

·        Cleansing: (To get rid of something unpleasant or unwanted)

As soon as we acknowledge our sinfulness; “walking in the light”, this very benefit of Christ’s blood begins to work in us and preserve us clean (I Jn 1:9).

·        Justifying:(Prove something to be right)

We can keep ourselves from falling by taking every wrong thought to the blood of Jesus.

·        Pleading: (Request)

The blood of Abel cried out for vengeance, but the blood of Jesus cries, “ Father forgive them”. In this manner the blood of Jesus is making intercession for us continually before God. We need to become intercessors (Heb 12:24).

·        Access: (Opportunity to approach)

We have the boldness to draw nigh and enter into the holiest place through His blood (Heb 10:20).

Sin means the transgression of law, but mistake means something done wrongly by chance.

In I Sam.17-40 and 50 we read that when Goliath came to fight against David, David chose five smooth stones out of the brook, to overcome the philistine with a sling and with a stone.  This stone shows the blood of Jesus.  Lev.17:11 says that life of the flesh is in the blood. Therefore blood means LIFE .  Because we have sin in us, our blood or our life becomes unclean.  Therefore we are called sinners.  A sinner cannot go to heaven.  His sins have to be washed to be made clean.  For this we need the blood of Jesus.  Just as we use a soap to wash the dirt of our body we need the blood of Jesus for our sins to be washed off.  Jesus shed His blood for us that is He gave His own life for us.  Since there was no sin at all in Jesus, His blood is Holy, powerful and precious.  Therefore the blood of Jesus makes us Holy and takes us to heaven.  “In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Eph 1:7).

I John 1:7 ….and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sins.

The blood of Jesus Christ is the most precious gift we have ever received on the earth.  He shed His last drop of blood also for us.  It is the most powerful weapon against the devil and his angels.

Blood of Jesus Christ has power to cleanse us.(IJn.1:7)  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us. His blood will cleanse and wash us from all our unrighteousness.

Blood of Jesus Christ has power to heal. (Jn.19:34) The blood of Jesus has tremendous power to heal.  History says that the soldier who smote him with a spear in His side was blind in one of his eyes. But as soon as the blood that came out of the side of Jesus Christ touched him, he was healed.

Blood of Jesus Christ has power to give us peace (Col.1:20) Through the blood of Jesus Christ which was shed on the cross, we have peace in any situation with all.

Blood of Jesus Christ has power to redeem us.(Ipet.1:19)We cannot be redeemed with perishable things as gold and silver. But we have redemption through the precious blood of Jesus.

Blood of Jesus has power to take us to the Most Holy place.(Heb.10:19) We can enter into the Most Holy place only through  the Blood of Jesus and not through any other way.

d)      BLOOD – It’s Blessings

·        Our soul is atoned for. Lev 17: 11 “It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

·        Our sins are remitted by His shed Blood. Matt 26:28  “For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Heb 9:22  “Without shedding of blood there is no remission”

·        We are cleansed from our sins by His precious blood. I John1:7 “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.

·        Our redemption and forgiveness of sin are in the blood of Jesus Christ. “ In whom (Jesus Christ) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His Grace. (Eph 1:7). For as much as ye know we were not redeemed with corruptible things as silver and gold but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot(I Peter 1:18,19)

·         Our reconciliation and peace with God are through the blood that is shed at Calvary (Col.1-20)And having peace through the blood of Jesus Christ.  His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself.

·         We are bought by His precious blood.

·         The purification of our conscience is through His blood.  Heb.9-14 …The blood Christ who through the eternal spirit offered Himself without spot to God shall purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

·        We find access to His Holy presence through the blood of Jesus Christ.  We have therefore brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus (Heb 10:19).

·        We are free from the final judgment because we are justified by His blood.(Rom.5:9)much more than being not justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath (judgment)through Him.

·        We overcame Satan by the blood of the lamb.(Rev.12:11) they overcame the devil by the blood of the lamb.

e)         Blood – It’s Works

There is a beautiful story of 2 sparrows that dwelt in the faith home.  One day they were singing and praising God joyfully silently hearing the message of the pastor there.  He was preaching about the beauty of Jesus (SS 5:10) – MY BELOVED IS WHITE & RUDDY.   After hearing this message they wanted to stand for the truth, one said JESUS IS WHITE and the other one JESUS IS RUDDY.

These two sparrows wanted to prove this by action.   They decided to offer a sacrifice daily according to the argument. The bird who said JESUS IS WHITE offered lily flower for God and the other brought rose flower.  Daily they brought the flowers to the Faith Home.  One day … it was so  … that there was no red rose there .. so the other sparrow started mocking saying this; now you accept that “MY BELOVED IS WHITE”.  This grieved the other sparrow much .. it went to the garden.  There were no red roses … but other white roses were there.  This sparrow fell upon the thorns of rose plant and thorns started piercing it and ozzed out drop by drop by which the sparrow was trying to change this white rose into red.  Till then other bird came with a screaming voice “what the hell it is?  Why did you do this???”.  The first bird said quietly “MY BELOVED IS RUDDY … I have proved it by giving my blood and life to my JESUS.  Now I am going to die .. kindly do me a favour .. My friend: please lay this red rose of my blood in faith home on my behalf|

Who is your beloved? Is he white to you?  White means just loving JESUS .. coming to service, singing, and worshipping and keep on going.  But if you say: My beloved is ruddy .. there is suffering in it.

Are you ready to shed your blood for your Beloved who gave His life to you?  Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Tim.3:12).  “… and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22).

f)      Blood - Witnesses

“And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel” – Hebrew 12:24.

·        Witnesses in the world through Holy Spirit, Water, Blood (I Jn.5:8)

·        Witnesses in Heaven 1 John 5:7  For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

·          Witnesses in the world 1 John 5:8

·        And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit (Holy Spirit), and the water (water baptism), and the blood (Salvation): and these three agree in one.

·         And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Heb 12:24

·        Acts 1:8 -But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. We who were once sinners and we who were once strangers to the common wealth of Israel, through His blood were redeemed. We are now witnesses in the world by being baptized in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost and having received the anointing power from above are made witnesses in the world.

b)     WORD OF GOD- Who is He?

Matthew 4:4- “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”.

In I Sam.17:40 and 50 we read that when Goliath, the Philistine came to fight against Israelites, David choose five smooth stones out of the brook and he prevailed over the philistine with the sling and a stone.  Out of these five stones one stone shows the Word of God.  This also is a powerful weapon. Who is this word?  This word is Jesus (Jn.1:1-3,14).  All the words written in the Bible are the words of God.  Therefore, these words are powerful and precious.  If we hate the word, we hate Jesus.  If we love the word, we love Jesus.  Why do we need the word of God?  The Word of God changes our life and it makes us like God (Eph.5:26,27).

·        Psalms 19:7 says His law or the word of God makes a fool wise.

·        We should read and meditate the word of God day and night, thereby our life will be flourished (Psa.1:3; Jer.17:7).

·        Matt.4:7 When Jesus came to the wilderness, Satan tempted Jesus but Jesus used of God to overcome Satan.

It is very important that we read Bible daily.  Job says, I esteem the word of God more than his daily food (Job 23:12).

c)       Power in the word of God

But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” – I Peter 1:25.

Word of God is eternal (Psa.119:89).   Heaven and earth will pass away, but the word of God endureth forever.

·        Word of God has power to heal.  He sent His word and heal the people (Psa.107:20).

When the Centurion’s servant was sick, he asked the Lord to utter only one word. His faith was ………….and his servant was healed.(Matt.8:8)

2.     Word of God has power to sanctify/cleanse us.  Jn15:3says “Yes, ye are clean through the word.”

3.     Word of God has power to calm storm.  When Jesus said “peace be still” the storm ceased (Mk.4:39).

4.  Word of God has power to overcome death.   Lazarus was dead and was in the sepulcher for 4 days.
