One thing that has always surprised me is TPM’s Tarrying meetings. They have mastered the art of twisting and therefore, they lead their people to a useless waste of Time every Saturday Night.

Q. Do you know what was the purpose for God to give the anointing of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ Disciples?

Ans. To Go and Preach the Gospel by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8

One of the important aspects of this Power received by the Holy Spirit is to have the same spirit of Love in God/Christ. And hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.  Romans 5:5.

God’s love has been expressed to mankind by sending his own begotten son to the Lost world. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

So when the Holy Spirit is inside us, we are expected to go to the Lost World and proclaim his Gospel as his disciple and help save the Sinners. It is not given to us to make a noisy neighbourhood every Saturday. Of course, the Holy Spirit also Comforts us, Helps us and teaches us all the way. But We do not see that happening in the lives of the TPM Ministers and the Believers.

Isn’t collectively speaking in tongues forbidden?

TPM believers are wired to speak “This church is established on Apostolic Principle.”  Well, the fact is exactly the contrary. The leaders of this church audaciously transgress apostolic instructions. They twist the apostolic principles to suit their teachings.  In his epistle to Corinthians apostle, Paul laid guidelines for the church, concerning public tongues-speaking. He says,

When you come together…If any man speaks in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, (Maximum 3) and THAT BY COURSE; (one by one –not all together) and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church (1 Corinthians 14:27,28)

Do I need to give one-page commentary on this simple instruction given by Apostle Paul? Isn’t it written in plain language, to not to conduct/ participate in tarrying meeting? Isn’t Paul speaking in clear words, that when you come together (v26), then speak in tongues, ONLY IF  gift of interpretation is operating in your midst. And when you do that, keep in mind to speak one by one, not all together. Otherwise, IF THERE BE NO INTERPRETER then KEEP SILENCE.  Why do apostles of TPM openly defy the instructions of Lord (v.37)? Why do apostles of TPM teach and practice against the instructions of Apostles of Jesus Christ?

Now listen to what Pastor SB Earnest has to say.

He agrees that we need to maintain discipline in the church. He also discourages clapping. But then he subtly twists above words of Paul to suite TPM tarrying meetings. He says, it is OK when All clap hands together and all speak in tongues, but it is sometimes devilish when only one person speaks in tongues. He may be right for those occasions where we see some demon screeching shouting during tarrying meeting, but I absolutely disagree with S B Ernest saying it is all right when all clap together, all speak in tongues together. This is open defiance to what Lord told Apostle Paul to instruct Corinthians Church. Paul says, to keep in silence rather than all speaking in tongues, all clapping together.

Was Acts 2 Barbarism?

One TPM believer gave the excuse of an event of Pentecost in Acts 2. Brothers and sisters, the language in Acts 2 was understandable (Acts 2:11). It needed no interpretation. They spoke in known languages like Parthians, Medes, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Cyrene, Arabians etc (Acts 2:8-11). They all heard speak them “WONDERFUL WORKS OF GOD.” Note that in Acts 2 it is not called UNKNOWN TONGUE, unlike in 1 Corinthians 14. “Tongues” mentioned in Acts of Apostles was known and understandable language. The Greek word used here in Acts is ἕτερος (heteros). This Greek word occurs 99 times in the bible and it is never translated as UNKNOWN. It is translated as strange, alter, other, another etc, but not unknown. So Acts 2 event was different than what we have in one Corinthians. Do not try to mix both. Acts two was a fulfilment of Joel. I Corinthians was a matter of private prayer (14:2). If private prayers (unknown tongues) are to be made public then people ought to understand what is being said – Either directly through known dialect (Acts 2, Acts 10) or indirectly then via interpreter (Acts 14:27). It must not be spoken in the air. Read what Paul has to say,

1 Corinthians 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.  10. There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.11. Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

Acts 2 wasn’t barbarism brothers & sisters! Do not justify TPM barbarism using Acts 2. Hearken to Apostle of Jesus (Paul) and ignore tradition set by Apostles of TPM. In Acts 10 too, we find that tongues spoken were understandable, as it is recorded, “they heard them magnify God.” (Acts 10:46)

Orderliness and Discipline in Church

Are we saying it is wrong to speak in tongues? No! Are we saying that Paul says to forbid in tongues? No! Then what is the issue? Apostle Paul says all things must be done in the church decently and IN ORDER.   The issue with TPM is that all people speak different things at the same time & all together. This is chaotic. This is what Paul is addressing in 1 Corinthians 14. Let me ask you one question. Do all believers sing different songs, in a different language altogether? Why not? Imagine this! Let Your centre pastor sing hymn number 100 from English hymn, and let worker brother sing hymn number 150 from Tamil hymn book, and let workers sisters sing hymn number 200 in Malayalam, and let all believers sing the hymns as they desire. Let them all do this together under the excuse of “I am feeling inspired in my heart to sing! Let us all rejoice in Lord!” How would that look? Will anybody understands anything? It will be called disorderly. If you don’t sing the song of a language of your choice and number – all together, then why do you fill in tongues all together?

Longer you keep filling, better are your chances

TPM has a doctrine that if you are to be caught up in the second coming, you need to be Fully Prepared.  This full preparation requires you to constantly be brimming with the Speaking in Tongues. Therefore they are asked to come every Saturday to renew their anointing. And how do they renew their anointing? Every Saturday these people who do not check the scriptures, come and make a big noise and think they are now ready for the coming of the Lord. The Clergy also makes it a point by telling them that this anointing is not enough to be caught up. This forces the laity to shout and scream more. I pity those poor neighbours who did not know of the Saturday nightmares before purchasing the plot next to TPM Faith Homes. This is what TPM does to make their people “PERFECT” as per Col 1:28.

What does Paul say in this matter? He says, “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. Nevertheless, in church, I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue (1 Cor 14:18,19).” TPM Pastors ask believers to speak ten thousand words in unknown tongues (longer) rather than 5 words with the mind.

Is tarrying for Holy Ghost instructed in Scriptures?

Tarrying Meetings? Is that Biblical or TPM Ritual?The word Tarrying meeting is derived from words of Jesus (Luke 24:49), “…tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” What were the disciples of Jesus supposed to do once the tarrying part was over? Were they supposed to come together every week and tarry again? No! They were to witness Jesus in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the world. Did Jesus say, “Whenever ye come together do this tarrying meeting in remembrance of Pentecost?” Do you know why Jesus asked his disciples to tarry? Why were not they endowed with power from high, right at the time of the accession of Jesus on clouds? To comprehend this we must understand the significance of seven feasts of Israel (Levi. 23). These feasts are viewed as God’s calendar. It began fulfilling from the death of Jesus on the cross – Passover (John 19:14). The Pentecost or fiftieth day was a day when people of Israel were to bring loaves of bread, to be offered as a wave offering. This event in Gods calendar needed to be fulfilled and therefore the Holy Spirit tarried till fifty days. And therefore Jesus asked disciples to tarry. That verse isn’t applicable to us. If you think otherwise please go to Jerusalem also, and tarry there.

Moreover, TPM misinterprets this weekly exercise as filling with the Love of God. They quote Romans 5:5  They Think this weekly exercise is filling in God’s Love. Every time they fill in this God’s Love, they keep coming to the same place and continue to fill.  You will not see a TPM Believer or Minister going out and Preaching the Gospel in his neighbourhood for which the Holy Spirit is given (Acts 1:8). Their vessels are filled with holes because whatever they are filled with, they never even accomplish anything regarding gospel propagation. They are least interested in doing the will of the Father who gave the Spirit with a purpose. All that they do is come again for the usual Saturday shouting match.

Gifts versus Fruits

What does the bible say about gifts of Spirit and fruits of Spirit?  TPM places much importance on gifts of Holy Spirit. Especially on unknown tongues! They say if you speak not in unknown tongues, you will not be caught up in the second coming of Christ.  But they never say if you have no fruits then your faith (religion) is dead. Paul says, “Though I speak with tongues of men and angels and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass and tinkling cymbal (1 Cor 13:1).” Everyone knows about the importance of fruits over gifts, and hence I refrain from increasing the length of the article. You know this better than me! Pray for us that we may not be sounding brass and tinkling cymbals.

Christ-less Pentecost

David Wilkerson wrote an article remembering tract by Frank Bartleman. He says Many are willing to seek power in order to perform a miracle, draw attention and adoration of people to themselves, thus robbing Christ of his glory and making a fair show in flesh…. But we must stick to our text – Christ. Any work that exalts Holy Ghost or gifts above Jesus will end up in fanaticism. The work of Calvary, the atonement must be the center of our consideration. The Holy Ghost will never draw our attention from Christ to Himself (See John 16:13-15) … Like Jews who spoke the name of Messiah with reverence but when he walked among them, he was not recognized, Christ is a stranger in midst of spirit-filled congregation.  We no longer want Christ as much as we want what he can do for us. We want an escape from pain and suffering. We want our troubles to vanish away. We want healing power. We want prosperity. We want protection. We want more of his earthly goods. BUT WE REALLY DON’T WANT HIM ALONE! HOW MANY OF US WOULD SERVE HIM IF HE OFFERED NOTHING BUT HIMSELF? NO HEALING. NO PROSPERITY. NO WORLDLY BLESSINGS. NO MIRACLES. NO SIGNS. NO WONDERS.

But how many magnify God for his work of Salvation (See Acts 2:11, 10:46)? Are tarrying meetings of TPM Christ-less tarrying meetings?

Conclusion

There is a verse in the Bible, in the book of Numbers. It says,

But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, ………..  the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Because he hath despised the word of the LORD and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him. (Numbers 15:30)

Therefore I request believers of TPM to not to violate commandments of God for the tradition of TPM. God bless you.

  2. Good article and true explanation. I was blindly attending this tarrying meetings and breaking my throat, voice and doing all acrobats thinking Holy Spirit was working in me. It’s an emotional experience and not a spiritual one. True results of anointing will be fruit of spirit and will have victory over sin .I am experiencing this after left tpm and attending a church where 1 Cor 14 is followed as per above article. Thanks

  3. Actually a good part of this continues in all the meetings not just Saturdays

    Example from New Covenant Pentecostal Church ( NCPC ) Australia , a branch of The Pentecostal Mission (TPM)

    1) Bible studies – 7 PM to 8:30 PM
    7 PM – 7:45 PM songs; 7:45 PM – 8 PM (devotion, they call devotion but I don’t know what they are devoting to) …it’s always chaotic loud tongue speaking and jumping); and only 8:00 – 8:30 PM bible study – whatever topic or chapter taken, they make sure they subtly instill a good amount of TPM cultish “apostlic” doctrine.
    2) Sunday worship (again a good amount of geared up upbeat tempo leading to chaotic “devotion”)
    3) Any special prayer meeting (very similar to tarry meeting).

    So, basically the poor neighbours’ plight is sealed throughout the week!

    • There are numerous Hymns in TPM which says like “Come Holy Spirit”, “Fall on me Holy Spirit”, “Give Power Holy Spirit” etc.
      This itself proves that they never had any Holy Spirit. They think Holy Spirit comes on an occasion and tickles you to scream and shout and that’s it. After that they make the Holy Spirit come the next time they gather together. These people do not believe that the Holy Spirit is given to us to live with us forever.

      And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:16-17

      On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. John 14:20

        TPMs version of “Anointing of Holy Spirit” is similar to mental / emotional version of Drug abuse!
        In fact, just couple of months ago the “conductor” saint himself in one of the tarry meetings told that “ofcourse, anointing gives you kind of emotional ecstasy but most importantly it sanctifies you”. I thought to myself that at least the first part he is honest in using the word emotional ecstasy but the latter part is a sugar coated lie.

        Without going into anything biblical, a little common sense would do to see what kind of selfish spirit would want you to spend hours get “anointed” just in order for you to have a feeling of ecstasy, happiness or whatever you call it as..when so many lost souls are perishing outside or someone is sick or needy and needs your physical help.
        One fine example is my own parent’s utmost priority would be to go to tarry meeting and get ‘filled’ rather than attending to own sick child. I’m saddened and ashamed to tell of my own family but if you look closely it’s actually very common in TPM circles what priority they give to family and other neighbours (Mark 12:31) – quite disgusting what they do in the name of “Holy Spirit”.

        Function:
        One important function of Holy Spirit is that it is symbol of life. It turns desert into garden, Death into life, chaos into peace. Yesterday night I was watching a video on it. Now when I woke up I saw again the same theme. Holy Spirit is one that imparts life and lives with us forever.

        Symbology:
        I always used to wonder why do they sign n shout, let the fire fall, let the fire fall… Holy Spirit also came in sound of rushing wind form, at other occasions it never came in that visible fiery, windy form again. It came once in form of dove. River is also used as symbol for Holy Spirit in many references. Most widely used symbol for Holy Spirit is wind. It is called “ruah” in original language.

        I wonder why do Pentecostals keep insisting on fiery symbol alone. They say let fire fall.. or fire fire fire .. why don’t they say let wind come.

        When Elijah went on mount, God spoke to him, but he was not in wind, he was not even in fire, he spoke in still small voice. This might mean that visible fiery demonstration might occur before coming of God, but he is not present in those loudy manifestation. He speaks through still small voice.

      And hey Can you please ask these other Pentecostals if they have this kind of weekly tarrying meetings? I am sure they will say NO. Some exceptions could be available based on who the pastor of the local assembly is. But as a Norm, they do not have this weekly screaming service.

    Justification of an exception doesnt help but its the norm that I have seen even in other pentecostal churches though they may label it as tarrying meeting but it happens in all there meeting.

    • Who is justifying an exception here…We say on the basis of 1 Cor 14 that the Tarrying meeting of TPM is an unfruitful unbiblical exercise.

    Every christian denomination has these kinds of fruits

    • I Remember an incident that happened in the Berlin wall where Germany was divided into east and west.
      The East Germans were indoctrinated by the Communists that the West was all dangerous people whereas, in reality, they were more prosperous and free. Due to constant instigation. a group of East Germans took truckloads of Garbage and human waste and dumped it to the west over the Berlin wall.
      Do you know what the West Germans Did in reply? They took truckloads of Food and Fruits/vegetables and dumped it to the East across the Berlin Wall.
      Such a behavior intrigued many people in the west. One of the leaders who dumped these Goods into the East from the west was interviewed. He was asked why they gave away good things in response to the garbage and human waste dumped by the east?
      He promptly responded – “We give away what we have. The east germans gave what they had and we gave what we had.”

      This is the same case with TPM Wellwisher who just gave a truckload of what he had(S**t) along with what his Clergy gives. We have been giving since 1 year what we had.

  12. Well said. In this context I will also exhort all to refer to messages by Capt. AM Samuel and Elder Zac on this subject where we will realise the way tarrying meetings conducted in TPM is never in accordance with the leading of the holy spirit. Thi Kati Kya.. seems to be the favourite with all to start this and sadly no one in TPM encourages to not only keep burning for two hours but all times. I remember in my younger days we were forced to be filled in spirit or be pushed or made to sit in front . So most children pretended they were in spirit. However now after going through the messages of these two respected servants of God, I realised we were never taught the truth. It was all about adhoc frenzy and screeming and getting hit by some one jumping onto yourself. In one of the messages of Zac he mentions that once a pentecostal believer came to his assembly and then claimed that their worship was not in spirit. On asking why, he replied that there was no noise thats why!!! Zac replied that they were led by Holy spirit and not Noisy Spirit….Any ways its fortunate that we have now been enlightened from our period of ignorance..so that we keep marching forward towards perfection. IC
